Summit releases OSHA training supervisor manuals
Written with an emphasis on accident prevention, using established guidelines, What Every Supervisor Must Know about OSHA provides guidance for organizations to ensure compliance with Federal Regulations. OSHA Training Institute Education Centers use the text as part of their curriculum for the OSHA 500 “Train the Trainer” program, providing managers, supervisors and safety personnel with the tools and knowledge needed to provide and maintain a safe worksite.

Topics covered in the publication include:
    • An overview of OSHA and how it works
    • How to read regulations and penalties
    • Steps for how to handle an OSHA inspection
    • Training tips to make your presentation sizzle
    • Accident affects on productivity
    • Workers’ compensation expense and legal liabilities

Available in both general industry and construction these manuals will be sure to keep all supervisors aware of what they need to know about OSHA. Summit’s new OSHA Training Supervisor Manuals are proven to be effective and instructive with pertinent information that will keep all worksites in compliance with OSHA.

Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental of Milwaukee, Wis., a member of the ALL Family of Companies, was presented with three Transportation Safety Awards during the annual conference of the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) April 15-19 in Bonita Springs, Fla.

Dawes was one of four SC&RA member companies receiving a Fleet Safety Award for having the lowest accident frequency rate in different mileage categories; Dawes won in the 1.5 Million to 5 Million Miles category. Dawes also received a Zero Accident Award for having no recordable accidents or injuries during all of 2006 and a Fleet Safety Improvement Award for showing a reduction in their accident frequency rate for miles traveled, compared to their previous year accident frequency rate.

The contests are part of SC&RA's ongoing effort to encourage its motor carrier members to transport, lift, and erect oversize and overweight items safely.

Midland Forge wins FIA safety award
Midland Forge, a division of the Columbus McKinnon family, has received an award from the Forging Industry Assn. for the most improved safety record at a Class 3 size forge. The award was presented recently at the 2008 FIA Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL.

With a DART (days away/restricted time) rating of 3.05 from OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), the forge received the award for a series of actions that impacted the improvement in the DART incidence rate. More specifically, in the calendar year of 2007, Midland Forge exceeded 325,000 hours without a lost time incident. Over 24 forges were included in a survey that determined that Midland Forge was to be the recipient of the “Most Improved” safety award. The Midland plant improved more than 85 percent when compared to the figure for the calendar year 2006.

The forge implemented several steps or practices that especially impacted the safety rating of the plant. A routine monthly meeting of a joint safety committee composed of employees from all areas and levels regularly discussed safety subjects and assessed areas that needed swift attention. Special focus groups were also formed in the areas of eye protection, safety maintenance, hearing protection as well as overall employee wellness.

ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. expands
ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. announced the addition of a new branch in Wilmington, NC, and the expansion of its existing facility in West Elizabeth, PA.

ALL Carolina Crane Rental of Wilmington LLC, located in Rocky Point, NC, is the latest member of the ALL Family of Companies, having begun operations effective Dec. 3, 2007. The new branch is strategically located to improve the ALL Family of Companies’ service to the robust Carolina market. “The new space is fantastic, and we’ll surely be able to be more active in this burgeoning market,” said Michael Liptak, president of ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. “We have doubled the office space, tripled the existing shop space, and provided an expansive yard to house all of our equipment.”

ALL Crane Rental of Pennsylvania announces the construction of its new facility in West Elizabeth, PA (south of Pittsburgh).

“We have increased our crane rentals and sales to a degree that we simply began to outgrow this facility,” says Robert Kelly, general manager. “The expansion will also allow room for future growth, and we anticipate we’ll need it.”

The new facility consists of 8,000 square feet of new office space and 15,000 square feet of shop space. An open house was scheduled for an early February introduction to the new operations.

Genie appoints new global general manager
Genie Industries announced recently that Alan Lofurno has been appointed to the new position of global general manager for the Genie boom product line. In his new role, Lofurno will set priorities and strategy for aerial booms globally.

“Alan’s extensive knowledge and prior experience will guide him in his new position with Genie Industries,” said Linda Mayer, Terex Aerial Work Platforms vice president and general manager, global marketing and product management. “With his skills and dedication, we expect Alan to have a positive impact in the growth of the aerial booms group.”

Prior to joining Genie Industries, Lofurno spent 16 years at Black & Decker in various roles. Most recently, he served as the director of outdoor equipment. His responsibilities included product marketing and directly overseeing gas equipment engineering.

Aerial lift veterans Allan Chew and Martin Davies recently joined the MEC Aerial Work Platforms International Sales team.

Chew has 20 years of industry experience representing UpRight, Genie and Snorkel in the Asia Pacific region. His MEC territory includes China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Brunei and India.

Davies was previously director of sales and marketing for Skyjack (Europe, Africa, and the Middle East). He now handles MEC sales in the UK (Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) plus he started up and operates the first MEC U.K. distribution center, based in Oswestry, Shropshire.

Trico adds ReachMaster to lineup
Trico Lift recently added the Falcon ReachMaster to its selection of fleet rentals. These aerial platforms lift a worker 95 feet high and are capable of passing through a door opening measuring as small as 2 feet 6 inches by 6 feet 6 inches.

“In an industry dominated by traditional boom lifts, the ReachMaster sets a new standard for compact, flexible and light aerial work platform design,” said Ken Pustizzi, Trico Lift president and CEO. “The reach of 95 feet has already proven helpful to contractors and maintenance crews needing considerable work height combined with limited or narrow access particularly in facilities with finished overhead construction.”

ANSI partners with ICC to electronically deliver I-Codes in Spanish
The International Code Council (ICC) has partnered with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to distribute the recently released Spanish versions of the 2006 International Codes in electronic format. These codes include the International Building, Fire, Residential, Energy Conservation, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas and Property Maintenance Codes. The popularity of the International Codes globally has provided the impetus for the Code Council to pursue development of these codes in multiple languages. In addition to interest outside the U.S., ICC has also experienced an increase in demand for the codes in Spanish from the Spanish-speaking community within the U.S.

“The Code Council is committed to partnering with others to provide the most current building safety solutions in as many different formats and languages as possible in order to serve the global community,” said Mark Johnson, International Code Council Business and Product Development senior vice president. “The Code Council is pleased to partner with ANSI to make it easier for building professionals to have access to the Spanish Codes through the Institute’s state of the art electronic delivery system.”
