OSHA proposes $60,000 in penalties against contractor
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited W. Jackson & Sons Construction Co. of Fort Pierce, FL, for two serious and two repeat safety violations following an inspection of the company's Sebastian, FL, jobsite in March. The agency is proposing penalties totaling $60,000 against the underground utilities contractor.
Inspectors found that the company failed to adequately protect employees from soil collapse in a trench more than five feet deep and did not provide a means of egress in a trench more than four feet deep. As OSHA previously had warned the company regarding both of these hazards, the agency proposed $50,000 in penalties for these repeat violations.
Employees at the site were observed working without protective helmets and were allowed to continue working in a trench not protected from cave-in, although a competently trained employee was on site. These two serious safety violations resulted in $10,000 in proposed penalties.
Heede heeds certification process
As of Aug. 4, Heede Southeast has seen 15 of its 16 crane operators take and pass the written NCCCO exam, with the one person retaking the exam shortly.
“As an ex-crane operator for 25 years, this to me is a blessing,” said Mike Hundley, Heede's safety director. “For our operators with their certification in their pockets and for other operators that have this, I believe we will see a big difference in the future.”
Heede also does the practical test at its facility in Pineville, NC, and will be pushing for the up-and-coming operators in the future to get their certification.
“More and more businesses are pushing the issue of crane operators having certification,” Hundley added. “Well NCCCO is the going thing. This business is serious business and we take it seriously.”
Field Safety guide translated to Spanish
NCCER and Prentice Hall Publishing announce the 2007 release of Field Safety in Spanish (Construcción de Andamios) to meet the emerging needs of the Hispanic workforce in the construction industry.
This 47.5-hour course provides the necessary safety task training to all field personnel. Designed for craft professionals, crew leaders, safety supervisors and superintendents, this course provides the fundamentals of safety and a solid foundation for advanced safety training.
“As the Hispanic construction workforce continues to grow, it is critical that we provide safety training that addresses the language and cultural differences on the job site,” said Ron McKenzie, CEO of TIC/The Industrial Company.
The Spanish-language Field Safety trainee guide features 19 modules, including the topic areas of hazard communication, personal protective equipment, work-zone safety, ladders and scaffolding, forklift safety, fall protection, confined spaces, and more.
The textbook features a glossary of more than 100 terms from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Also included in this edition are module trade term quizzes, questions to help participants apply theory to experiences, case histories, and success profiles.
Students successfully completing Spanish Field Safety through an NCCER Accredited Training Sponsor will earn transcripts, certificates, and wallet cards from the NCCER National Registry. |
